Seeding is one of the most important services you can have for your Fescue lawn. The weeks immediately after seeding are vital to the success of your new seedlings! Please read the following post-seeding instructions. Again, thank you for being a loyal customer and for trusting us with your seeding.
Watering:
Weeks 1-2: Water twice a day, 20-30 minutes per zone, morning and evening.
Week 3: Resume normal watering schedule based on weather and lawn conditions.
The goal is to keep the seed and soil consistently moist without creating standing water or soggy conditions. Watering times need to be adjusted according to the weather. In the event of rain, remember: one significant rain event is enough to skip one watering day on your normal watering schedule.
For regular watering cycles, we recommend deep infrequent watering. This would be longer watering times, for fewer days throughout the week. Example: 30 minutes per zone, three times a week. This will encourage water to move deeper into the soil profile and encourage the root system of your turf and landscape to grow deeper, chasing the moisture. A healthy, deep root system is the most important factor in mitigating the stresses of our Middle Tennessee summers.
MOWING:
- Germination for Turf Type Tall Fescue can be anywhere between 7 and 21 days, depending on the conditions of your lawn.
- We recommend not mowing seeded areas until after germination has occurred.
- A good rule of thumb would be to wait 3 weeks before mowing the lawn.
- A good mowing height for Turf Type Tall Fescue would be 3.5–4 inches, once a week until growth has slowed this winter.
- Once you are ready to mow, please ensure the blades are sharp and mow slowly. This will be the first mowing for your new seed. Mowing with dull blades or mowing too quickly can damage the newly forming turf.
Do not be afraid to mow; mowing is encouraged and needed after germination. Do not let the new seedling become tall and wispy. Mowing the immature turf at the proper height and interval will encourage deeper root growth and canopy density, ensuring your fescue is mature enough and ready for winter by the end of fall.
Touch Up Seed:
The bag of seed is intended for areas where germination may be poor. We recommend not using this seed for at least one month after seeding. When applying the extra seed in these areas, your goal is that, if you were to place a quarter on the ground, you should be able to see approximately 3 seeds on the quarter’s surface.
Please avoid putting too much seed in one area. Seeding an area too heavily can increase competition between seedlings and contribute to spring melt-out, a fungal lawn disease that causes patches of grass to rot, thin out, and die.
Lastly, be patient. Germination can vary depending on temperature, moisture, sunlight, and other conditions. Some areas of your lawn may germinate faster than others. Please allow time for your new seed to germinate and establish.
